Alice Shiels live in the studio next Monday...

...which we are really looking forward to. Torquay-based Alice will play and sing for us and Martin Henning will be chatting with her. Read about Alice - and hear her too - here.

That was 2008

and Rich and I enjoyed the show we did yesterday. It was good that Pete Canter (soon, we trust, to host 200% Pure on Phonic FM) looked in to see us and have a twiddle with the controls. No emails - we just hope we had listeners! Martin Hodge

Many thanks to Jim Causley...

...who sang and played for us superbly and to all the merry wassailers: Lynn Walsh plus Gavin and Conrad Hodge. And, of course, to Martin Henning for his encouragement! Lynn got a bit more than she bargained for but will be eternally known as the woman who sang exquisitely with the world famous Jim Causley on the wireless.

Jim & Lynn pictured right. Click on pic for Jim's website

Jim sang (with his own accordian accompaniment and Lynn) The Sugar Wassail plus 1 other (Sorry, Jim, can't remember the name of it - let me know, if you see this!)

Roots and Shoots Seasonal Special

Next Monday 22 December we'll be having our own little party in the Phonic FM studio between 6 and 8pm and playing suitable ditties - most of which, we feel sure, you won't hear anywhere else on the radio.

We will have a special feature on Wassailing including music from Devon by Wren Music and Jim Causley pictured right: picture by Elizabeth Livermore: http://www.flickr.com/photos/evilibby/

Chris, Dave & Rich Live!

Many thanks to the fabulous musicians we squeezed into the studio: Chris Rudd (great you brought your bazouki, Chris: a beautiful clear-cut sound; an excellent choice of songs, wonderfully rendered) and then Dave Wood with guitar (a lovely set, Dave; superb singing and playing: sorry again for crawling round under you while you played - for technical enhancement, you understand!). Not forgetting our very own Rich accompanying Dave on frenetic bongos. As I said onair, I felt very priveleged to be at a concert just for me - though we do hope you listened too! Pictured Chris (above) Dave (below)
For us Chris performed Happy In The World and Apple For You, Eve. Dave did A Wager, A Wager plus Peggy Gordon plus JT/Becks/Cuba -the last set with Rich.

You can catch Chris's band Spin2 plus Dave Wood and Rich Cooke at Exeter Phoenix this Friday 19th December for a seasonal Concert to support the work of Exeter-based charity Magic Carpet

From Bhangra to Andrzejki

We showcase a (world) wide range of musical styles and folk traditions on the show and on this Monday's show they included jazzy Cornish dance music to wild bhangra to smooth Somalian music to stirring border pipes to funky guitar. Not forgetting some great Polish music. And all from our little studio in Exeter.

It was a joy to talk with Irene and Robert about Polish traditions like fortune-telling on Andrzejki, St Andrew's Day (still being kept up - certainly in Tiverton and Exeter), life for Polish people in and around Exeter (generally good it seems, even if it means getting up at 5 am to go to work) and Polish and other local people's plans for working together for mutual understanding, enjoyment and fulfilment.

Events we publicised included two that, unfortunately, clash (Ah well - there's so much going on!) next Saturday:

Andrzejki (St Andrew's Day) Party at the Malster's Arms, Woodbury near Exeter: from 7pm. Entry by tickets (£15). Prince includes Polish buffet, Polish DJ and music, fun fortune-telling and organised transport. Details and tickets from The Polish Shop, Bartholomew Street, Exeter.

Wren Music Concert with David Faulkner, Voices In Common, Campus Choir, Rough Music, Marilyn Tucker & Paul Wilson: St David's Church, Hele Road, Exeter. Proceeds to Chestnut Appeal, the prostate cancer charity. More details here.

Unless you speak Polish, you probably won't know what this is. Well, it's a day linked with Polish folk traditions and you can find what happens on rootsandshoots this Monday. Our guests Irene and Robert will inform you about the new Exeter Polish association Polonica too. Oh, and listen to some good music from Poland as well.

The lone DJ

It's a bit odd sitting in a studio on your own with headphones on, playing music and talking to yourself. You just hope that you are talking to...someone. Listeners tend to listen and not phone, text or email in - but it's reassuring when they do. Nobody did this time. Still, I very soon began to enjoy my short-term solitary confinement -though it was nice when Aaron and a photographer looked in - even though they didn't want another photo of me! Anyway, assuming that some of you were listening, you may want a list of what I played... Martin Hodge

PS. The show should have started with our theme tune by Spinach For Norman - but didn't. You can hear and dance to the band at the Ceilidh For Amnesty International at St James' Church Hall on Saturday 8th November. I'll be calling dances.

Yesterday and tomorrow...

...or actually the other way round!

Tomorrow on rootsandshoots: all 3 of us! Don't miss it!!

And now to yesterday! I wrote the following item for the Phonic FM website but I think it's relevant to print it here too as 2 of us from rootsandshoots were involved in the Phonic FM leaflet drop yesterday... Martin Hodge

PHONIC FM: Spreading the word through the letterbox
Saturday 11th October: 11 am (ish). Early in the day for some; well into the day for others. Pete Bishop's Phonic FM leafletting crew gather outside the Victoria Inn in Union Road. "Good turnout" says Pete (Deep Sea Ball) to Ellie (Radio Mundo), Terry (Collision), Rich and Martin (Roots & Shoots) and David (The Edge Of Jazz). The pub is closed (maybe just as well as we might not have got anything done, apart from talking, which we all do well). Pete's super-duper new leaflet is handed out:

PHONIC FM - Exeter's Sound Alternative - No Playlists, No Adverts and in smaller print ("rightly so", say some): Your community radio station.
106.8FM in the Exeter area

Our patch is sorted. Terry asks if he can be a bit cheeky and add his own Collision leaflet to our pile - and to his delight all declare it a good thing. Off we go to stick the papers in through a variety of easy-to-use as well as easy-to-get-your hand-stuck in letter boxes, occasionally meeting real occupants who are delighted to get the news of Phonic FM, the perfect antidote for complaints about high rotation playlists (Radio World Magazine, quoted on the handout).

At 2pm we get together for lunch and drinks at Exeter Phoenix (Thanks to Patrick for proving there is such a thing as a free lunch) and we reminisce over the wonderful morning's leafletting. It's going to happen again next month in another part of Exeter. Do come and join us to spread the word about a genuinely refreshing, genuine alternative from which the best is yet to come (Radio World again, not us blowing our own trumpets - though we all agree they're right).
